Three men were arrested for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition in Centurion on Wednesday morning.
The arrest was made through an intelligence-driven operation around 10:30 on the corner of West and Hall streets, said Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller.
“There has been an increase in the number of street and business robberies in our policing area lately. We have picked up this tendency and started narrowing down where the suspects were operating,” he said.
While on patrol, the Lyttelton crime prevention officers spotted a suspicious white Mercedez Benz doing rounds in the area, Miller said.
“The vehicle was stopped and three men inside were found to be in possession of unlicensed firearms”
He said the men were arrested thanks to joint efforts by police and the intelligence team.
“We are currently investigating the possibility that the vehicle they were traveling in may be stolen as well as linking them to several business robberies in and around Lyttelton.”
Lyttelton station commander Brigadier Matlala welcomed the work by the officers during the operation.
He thanked everyone involved in the arrests.
