A terrible incident has taken place.
South African female boxing champion Leighandre “Baby Lee” Jegels has been shot dead on Friday, allegedly by her police officer boyfriend.
The 25 year old champion could not survive the fatal attack.
According to Dispatch Live website, the incident took place on Friday following a high speed chase in the Eastern Cape at around 14:00.
Jegels was reportedly shot by her police officer boyfriend and also wounded the boxer’s mother. Jegel’s mother was rushed to the hospital.
According to the publication, the officer is being hunted down by members of his own unit and remains at large.
Jegels has not fought since August 2017 and has an unbeaten record of 9-0with 7 knockouts.
She was expected to make her comeback in July but the Saudi Arabia tour was cancelled after the kingdom “revoked the move saying that women shouldn’t be involved in boxing, wrestling or any aggressive sport”.
A number of SA boxers have been killed or injured by criminals in recent years. One of them was Mzukisi Sikali, who was stabbed to death in 2005.
Chris Whiteboy, who won the SA junior lightweight title in 1983, was shot dead outside his house in Delft, Cape Town, in October 1995. And Richard Smith was shot dead at his home south of Johannesburg few years ago.
Former IBF junior lightweight champion Cassius Baloyi was shot in the leg in an attempted hijacking in Braamfontein, Johannesburg, in 2001.
Mpisekhaya Mbaduli, a provincial junior lightweight champion, was shot in KwaNobuhle, Port Elizabeth, in 2002 and Luvuyo Kazaka, a Cape light-weight champion, was shot dead at home in Cape Town in 2003.
