There was a deep appreciation of the gallant police officers that foiled the robbery at a business premises in Isipingo KZN.
South Africa’s Police Minister, Bheki Cele, has praised officers who killed nine suspects, linked to a foiled robbery in Isipingo, south of Durban.
Cele says the police must be supported in the fight against dangerous and armed criminals.
A 29-year-old suspect has been arrested.
Members of the crime intelligence, task force and K9 units pounced on a gang of would-be robbers on Saturday morning.
This followed a tip-off about a planned robbery at a business premises in the area.
Unlicensed firearms, explosives and tools used for breaking and entering were recovered at the scene.
Officials of South Africa police service SAPS received intelligence report of armed robbers attempting to rob a business premises in the early hours of Saturday, officers swiftly headed to the location and immediately the robbers sighted the police they started firing gun shots.
A fierce shoot out ensued and nine members of the gang were declared dead on the scene.
Police spokesperson Nqobile Gwala explains.
“While we were busy at the scene where seven suspects died during an exchange of fire between the police and the suspects, gunshots were also heard emanating from the other side not far from the main crime scene.”
Gwala said the two suspects were also declared dead on the scene after they shot at police, who retaliated.
