Gerda Steyn wins the @ComradesRace for the women’s race.
South Africa’s Gerda Steyn won the women’s race at this year’s Two Oceans Ultra Marathon in Cape Town on Saturday. In the men’s race, Justin Kemboi Chesire claimed victory, with South African, David Gatebe, finishing in third.
Steyn crossed the finish line in 3h39mn31s, becoming only the second South African woman in 17 years to win the ladies’ event.
Poland’s Dominika Stelmach was second, just more than 2mn off the pace, followed by another South African, Charne Bosman.
Chesire won in 3h9mn21s, a minute ahead of 2014 winner, Lebenya Nkoka of Lesotho.
2016 Comrades winner, Gatebe, rounded off the podium in third.
Chesire is only the second Kenyan to win the race.
Meanwhile, a 43-year-old runner has died after collapsing during the Two Oceans Marathon. Organisers of the event say the woman experienced difficulties on the Southern Cross Drive.
They say prolonged attempts by doctors to resuscitate her failed. The runner’s family has been alerted and no further details have been released.
