Extradition of the Guptas begins

After several years going back and forth, attempts to extradite members of the controversial Gupta family are still ongoing.

South Africa has no extradition agreement with the United Arab Emirates.

Justice Minister Ronald Lamola has told Parliament’s Justice Committee that government is relying on a UN convention for mutual assistance in this matter.

Members of the Gupta family are accused of being involved in state capture.

They are believed to have been living in Dubai since fleeing South Africa in 2018.

“Discussions are progressing very well. There are hiccups,” Lamola said.

“The windows of engagement are open. There is work happening.”
