Strange as it sounds, this is not a story that is taken from the pages of a book from the 1700s. This is a recent story of a bride-to-be and her fiancé, who believed a woman’s purity was found in her vagina.
The bride shared her story on Reddit and wrote that she was 22 while her fiancé was 25 at the time. “My fiance proposed to me about 8 months ago. We decided on having a relatively small wedding which is in two days. Everything was going great. He seems absolutely perfect and we are very much in love,” she wrote. “I am a virgin and so is he, he wanted to save it for marriage and I wasn’t fussed so I agreed to saving it.”
Here’s where the story starts making your stomach turn. “He has told me earlier that in his family the father checks the virginity of the bride the night before the wedding,” the young woman shared. “I laughed this off as it seriously sounds like a massive joke. No turns out he was dead serious.”
It also turned out that it wasn’t just her fiance’s father, but a couple of other male relatives, too, would be present in the room, for the discovery of whether her flower is still in the garden, to see if her cherry had been popped yet, to make sure the seal is still intact. This itself is quite ridiculous because hymens don’t equal to a woman’s virginity status.
Fahimeh Sasan, doctor of osteopathy and an ob-gyn explained to Women’s Health that a hymen can tear long before having sex for the first time, as a result of horse-riding, cycling, rigorous exercises, gymnastics, and several other activities.
Now, coming back to the story, the man wanted his bride-to-be to spread her legs in front of his dad and uncles. “He wants me, the night before to open my legs up in a small ceremony type thing so his dad can check me while him, his brothers and uncle can watch so that they know I am still ‘pure’,” the post continues. “I told him fat chance I am going to do that and he was begging to me to go through with it and how important it is for him. He said he knew it was slightly embarrassing for me but his mom did and it will prove how much I love him and that I have nothing to hide anyway as I am still a virgin.”
“I left and he was crying, it was very dramatic tbh,” she adds.
Now stuck in an unlikely situation, the 22-year-old went from feeling like they were “genuinely perfect for each other”, to contemplating calling off the entire wedding.
She later posted an update where she made her final choice about whether or not she wants to go through with the wedding. At first, she went back to her fiancé later to talk about her father checking her hymen like it’s a virginity-detector.
“I told him that his father is not going to look at me and he needs to respect that. He was adamant that it needs to happen and accused me about lying about my virginity,” she wrote. “I was trying to be calm and rational but he was not having it and just became more and more angry. I told him if he really loved me he would stand by me on this and tell his father no to which he slapped me and said he didnt need to prove anything.”
“I ended it and left him,” she said. “I am currently back at my friends house being miserable and eating pizza which is pretty fun.”
You go girl!
Surely, one would take pizza and maybe a few days of “getting over it” instead of spreading their legs for potential in-laws.
