A supervisor of a grass cutting company has been arrested and several other employees of the business are being questioned after a 31 year theft suspect died in hospital this morning (Friday).
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa attended to a call out on Tottenham Road in Parkgate yesterday (Thursday) at 11:12 after a naked man collapsed on a driveway with approx 90% burns to his body. It was established that he was doused with petrol and set alight after he was accused of stealing a grass cutting machine.
The community gathered at the scene and threatened to attack the grass cutters if they returned to the area. They expressed their anger at the brutality against the injured suspect believing that the punishment did bot fit the crime.
Reaction Officers interviewed the man who had provided information regarding the suspects who had set him alight. He was transported rapidly to Osindiweni Government Hospital in a critical condition where he died this morning.
Prior to his death, Innocent Mtetwa provided information on the suspects. According to the dying man the community had stepped in and attempted to save his life however the grass cutters doused him with petrol and set him alight before driving off in a white Toyota Hilux bakkie & leaving him for dead.
The man informed Reaction Officers that he had stolen the grass cutting machine and was previously arrested but he did not deserve to be burnt alive.
Police arrested the supervisor of the grass cutting business after he attempted to report a case of theft of equipment at the Verulam SAPS today.
Based on the dying declaration of the victim the complaint in this matter was placed under arrest and detained. Seven others were questioned and further arrests are expected.
The mother of the victim contacted Reaction Unit South Africa from the bed of a hospital in Richards Bay stating that she could not come out to see her dying son as she was admitted at a medical facility herself. She explained that she is also employed as a nurse and had provided everything she could afford to her son but he continued with his petty criminal activities.
Investigations into the murder is ongoing.
