SA records first Covid-19 deaths as cases surpass 1,000

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has announced that South Africa has recorded it’s first COVID-19 related deaths.

In a statement released on Friday morning, he said: “These two deaths occurred in the Western Cape. One at a private hospital and the other at a public hospital.”

Mkhize said more details surrounding the deaths would be released later in the day.

“We will give more details later on, when we announce the latest confirmed COVID-19 cases, which have increased from yesterday’s number and have tipped the 1000 mark.”

He said the number has increased from Thursday’s 927 cases and there are now more than 1,000 cases.
